Firmamento Musicale – Meditations in Music
A firmament of sounds for contemplating the Mystery
There is music that is not created simply to be heard, but to guide the heart toward that which transcends it. It is from this conviction that the Musical Firmament was born—the summer festival organized by the Musical Chapel of the Cathedral Basilica of Como, which, from August 6 to 14, accompanies the diocesan community and the many visitors to our city on the journey toward the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, patroness of the Cathedral.
The title of the initiative draws inspiration from the image in the Book of Revelation: “On her head was a crown of twelve stars” (Rev 12:1). Like a firmament composed of many lights, this festival too is made up of various events, each with its own voice and its own light, yet all oriented toward a single center: the mystery of Mary in her glory and, through her, the mystery of Redemption.
The evenings thus become the stars of a single journey. The Cathedral’s magnificent monumental organs will resound through the artistry of international performers such as Aart Bergwerff, alongside Lorenzo Pestuggia, the Cathedral’s titular organist, and other guest artists. The dialogue between organ and trumpet, chamber music with *Il canto dell’anima*, the cultural evening “Mary and the Mystery of Redemption,” and the concert dedicated to St. Cassian on the centennial of Maestro Aldo Ghedin’s birth, will offer different perspectives on a single narrative: that of beauty leading to contemplation.
But the Firmamento Musicale does not forget its true origins. The music that resounds in the Cathedral springs first and foremost from the liturgy and returns to serve it. For this reason, the program includes a Holy Mass in memory of the cathedral’s deceased choir directors, organists, and cantors—a grateful remembrance of those who have preserved this tradition over the centuries—and culminates in First Vespers for the Solemnity of the Assumption, when the concert gives way to prayer and beauty becomes liturgy.
Once again this year, “Firmamento” extends beyond the Cathedral, involving the Basilica of San Carpoforo, the Basilica of San Fedele, and the Provost Church of San Cassiano in Breccia, creating a journey that unites some of the most significant sites in the Christian history of the city of Como.
In an age when everything seems to pass so quickly, Firmamento Musicale invites us to pause, listen, and lift our gaze. For just as the stars guide our way through the night, so too does sacred music continue to point the way today: toward the beauty that opens us to the Mystery and leads us to an encounter with God.
